How to choose an electric scooter

• Range. The quoted range is measured with a light rider at a steady speed. Cold weather, hills and extra weight cut it noticeably — allow a margin for your daily route.
• Wheels and suspension. 10-inch pneumatic tyres and suspension smooth out cobbles and kerbs; a model with smaller wheels is lighter and more compact.
• Brakes. A mechanical drum or disc brake combined with an electronic brake stops you reliably even on wet roads.
• Weight and folding. If the scooter has to be carried upstairs or taken on public transport, check its weight and folded size.
• Water resistance. The IPX rating shows how well the scooter copes with splashes and rain.

For kids and for fun

A kids' scooter has a lower top speed and a light frame. The Segway go-kart is meant for riding on a kart track, an open lot or private ground.
