A robot mower without a boundary wire
New robot mowers do not need a boundary wire buried round the lawn. Position comes from RTK satellite navigation, refined by cameras and computer vision. You draw the mowing area and no-go zones in the app; the robot mows in neat lines and returns to charge on its own.
What to look at
- Lawn area. Pick a model rated for a little more than your lawn — that leaves room for an awkwardly shaped garden.
- Slopes and terrain. An all-wheel-drive model copes with steeper slopes and rough ground.
- Edges. Some models have an edge-cutting module that mows along fences and flower beds; it may be sold separately.
- RTK station. Whether the model uses its own base station or network RTK is stated in the product description.

Frequently asked questions
Does a robot mower mow in the rain? Most models can pause during rain and carry on later. The protection rating and rain behaviour are in the product description.
What about winter? Clean the mower, charge the battery and store it somewhere dry and frost-free.
