What to choose
- Thermal paste goes between the CPU and the cooler. A tube of a couple of grams lasts for several builds; replace it when temperatures creep up over the years.
- Thermal pads sit on graphics card memory, power stages and SSDs, where the gap is wider than a paste layer. Match the thickness to the old pad.
- Liquid metal conducts heat best, but it also conducts electricity and attacks aluminium. Copper surfaces and experienced hands only.
- Tools — a spatula, cleaner and protective varnish make the job clean and safe.

How much paste should I apply? A pea-sized drop in the centre — the cooler's pressure spreads it.
Do I need to clean off the old paste? Yes. Remove it with isopropyl alcohol or a cleaner first, then apply the new layer.
