How to choose a washing machine

A washing machine is a ten-year purchase, so check four things before ordering: how much space you have, how much laundry you produce, how much electricity the machine uses and how quietly it runs.

Depth and installation. Standard width is 60 cm; a 42–45 cm depth fits a tight bathroom, while 55–65 cm gives a larger drum. Top loading works where a front door cannot swing open.
Load capacity. 5–6 kg suits one or two people, 7–8 kg is the usual family choice, 9–10.5 kg washes duvets and large loads in one go.
Spin speed. 1000 RPM leaves laundry damper; 1200–1400 RPM shortens drying noticeably. Spin class B is typical, A is the best.
Energy class. A is the most efficient; the gap between D and A is several tens of euros of electricity per year. Check consumption per 100 cycles (kWh) too.
Drying. A washer-dryer combo saves space, but dries a smaller load than it washes — plan for that.
Noise level. 70 dB is a normal wash cycle; if the machine sits next to an open kitchen, pick a quieter model with an inverter or direct drive motor.

Bosch and LG offer quiet direct drive and steam programmes, Gorenje and Beko give a fair price and classic build, Candy and Whirlpool are strong on slim and affordable models, and Midea and TCL bring newer energy classes to the lower price range.

Delivery and installation

A washing machine is oversized cargo: it does not fit a parcel machine and travels by oversized courier (€24.90) to your front door. Before ordering, check your doorway widths and where the water and drain connections are.
