The cliff sensor looks down at the floor and stops the robot at a step or the edge of a staircase. A failure is alarming to watch: the robot either refuses to move and reports a sensor error, or stops seeing the drop at all. Left and right sensors are not interchangeable, so match the part number and the side — and wipe the windows first, since dark rugs and dust cause false triggers.
