How a self-cleaning litter box works
When the cat leaves, the box waits a few minutes, sifts the used litter into a separate compartment and levels the clean litter. Scales and sensors recognise the cat and do not start while it is inside. The app shows how often the cat visits — a change in that number is often the first sign of a health problem.
What to look at
- Litter type. An automatic box works with clumping litter — bentonite, mixed or tofu. The maker states in the manual which suits.
- Waste compartment. The bigger it is, the less often you change the bag; for one cat a weekly change is usually enough.
- Accessories. A mat traps scattered granules, an odour eliminator cuts the smell, and bags made for your model fit the compartment exactly.

Frequently asked questions
Is an automatic litter box suitable for a kitten? Most makers advise using it from a minimum body weight so the sensors detect the cat reliably. The limit is in the manual.
Can I use ordinary litter? For sifting, the litter has to clump. Non-clumping litter and wood pellets are not suitable for an automatic box.
