How to choose a sewing machine needle
- Needle type by fabric. Universal needles suit cotton, linen and blends. Denim needles pierce heavy denim, canvas and several layers. Jersey (ballpoint) needles slip between the knit loops without damaging them. The cutting point of a leather needle is made for leather and faux leather. Quilting needles handle multi-layer quilts.
- Size. 80/12 is for light to medium fabrics, 90/14 for medium and 100/16 for heavy ones. The first number is metric, the second the same size in the US system.
- Needle system. Most household sewing machines take flat-shank needles of the 130/705 H system. Check your manual, especially for an overlocker or an industrial machine.
- Assorted packs. A pack with several sizes is a good choice if you sew different fabrics.

When to change the needle
Needles go blunt without you noticing. If the machine skips stitches, the thread breaks, the fabric puckers or the needle makes a clicking sound, it is time for a new one. A good habit is to fit a fresh needle at the start of every larger project and always after the needle has hit a pin. Insert it as the manual shows, usually with the flat side to the back, pushed all the way up.
