How to choose a ladder

• Type. A step ladder stands on its own and suits indoor jobs near the ceiling and cupboards. A leaning ladder takes you higher — to the eaves, windows and trees. A 2-in-1 multi-purpose ladder works both as a step ladder and as a straight ladder.
• Telescopic ladder. Retracts into a short package that fits in a car, a cupboard or a storeroom. Each section locks separately.
• Working height. The height you can reach is the ladder length plus your own reach. Go by the working height the manufacturer states, not just the ladder length.
• Load rating. Read the maximum load on the ladder's label and include tools and materials in it. Ladders sold in Europe are marked according to the EN 131 standard.
• Stability and comfort. Wide rungs, non-slip feet and a stabiliser bar make the work more secure.
• Work platforms. For longer jobs on a ceiling or wall, a telescopic work platform is more comfortable than a ladder — you stand on a stable deck.

Using a ladder safely

Set a leaning ladder at an angle of about 75°: for every four metres of height the foot should be one metre from the wall. Before climbing, check that all locks and catches are fully engaged. Stand the ladder on a level, firm surface, keep your body centred and maintain three points of contact. Do not overreach to the side — move the ladder instead. Do not work on a ladder outdoors in strong wind.

FAQ

How do I know a telescopic ladder is locked? Each section's lock should click into place and its indicator show the locked position. Do not use the ladder if any lock stays open.

Can I stand on the top step of a step ladder? Generally not — follow the label, which shows the highest step you may stand on.
