What to take camping
- Saw and multi-tool. A folding saw cuts firewood and branches faster and more safely than an axe. A multi-tool — pliers, blades and screwdrivers in one — fixes gear on the spot.
- Dry bag. A roll-top bag keeps clothes, sleeping bag and documents dry in a boat, a canoe or the rain. A few small bags also keep a backpack in order.
- Air pump. An air bed, mat or swim ring fills in minutes without running out of breath.
- Mosquito repellent. The ThermaCell refill fits that maker's repellent devices; the device itself is sold separately.
- Fishing. A Deeper sonar is cast on the line and shows depth, bottom and fish on your smartphone. A phone mount fixes the phone to the rod handle.
What to look at
- Weight and packed size. Every gram counts on a walking trip; at a car camp comfort matters more.
- Capacity. Size a dry bag by what goes in: a small one does for documents and a phone, a sleeping bag needs a bigger one.
- Compatibility. Refills and mounts fit specific devices — check the product description.

Frequently asked questions
Can a dry bag go under water? A roll-top bag withstands rain, splashes and a short dunk if the top is rolled at least three times. It is not made for staying under water.
Does the ThermaCell refill include the device? No — the pack holds only the repellent and fuel. The device is sold separately.
