What the temperature ratings mean
Every bag carries three numbers, and only one of them matters when buying.
- Comfort temperature. The temperature at which an average person sleeps soundly through the night. Choose your bag by this figure.
- Limit temperature. You can still sleep curled up, but comfort is gone.
- Extreme temperature. A survival limit, not a sleeping one. Ignore it when buying.
An Estonian summer needs a comfort rating of +5…+10 °C; for spring and autumn choose something around 0 °C.
Shape and fill
- Mummy holds heat best and weighs least — the right choice for hiking.
- Rectangular gives more room and opens out into a quilt — good for car camping and guests.
- Fill. Synthetic tolerates damp and dries fast; down is lighter and packs smaller but stops insulating once wet.

Frequently asked questions
Why are the men's and women's ratings different? The EN standard measures them separately because the average woman feels cold sooner. Buying as a gift? Go by the women's comfort rating and you will not go wrong.
How should I store a sleeping bag? Not compressed. For long periods hang it in a wardrobe or keep it in a large mesh sack, otherwise the fill loses loft.
